Before Knowing Fire Extinguisher types we should know how Fire starts.

A Fire is a chemical reaction and requires three elements in order to burn.

Oxygen + Heat + Fuel = Fire

If one of these elements is not present, the fire cannot start.

Oxygen – Like Humans to survive, a fire also needs oxygen. When oxygen is combined with flammable vapors a chemical reaction occurs that gives of heat at a molecular level, without oxygen a fire cannot be ignited.

Heat – a fire occurs when oxygen is mixed with flammable vapors and is ignited by a spark.

Solids give off flammable vapors when heated, some solids such as paper or flour appear to ignite instantaneously. This is because they give off vapors and reach a flammable temperature almost immediately.

Liquids are slightly different to solids. Where solids need a degree of heat to produce gaseous vapor, many liquids produce vapor when cold.

Fuel – Fuels can take almost any form, different fuels burn at different temperatures and at different rates.

Different Fire Extinguisher types are designed to stop the chemical reaction that creates a fire and removes one or more of the elements a fire needs to burn.

Water fire extinguishers work by removing the Heat element from the reaction.

They do also work slightly to separate the oxygen from the fuel but foam extinguishers are much better for this as they tend to leave a thin layer of foam over the fuel.

Carbon Dioxide Extinguishers

Carbon Dioxide fire extinguishers work by removing the oxygen from the environment so it is unable to react with flammable vapors.

The extremely cold discharge from a carbon dioxide extinguisher also removes the heat.

Carbon dioxide Gas is heavier than Oxygen and When it is filled at very low temprature. So when targeting CO2 on fire it replace oxygen and also apply cooling effect on surface of fuel. Also CO2 don’t have any residue and safe for fires in electrical appliances
